WEDNESDAY, January 29 Genesis 16:8. Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going? In an African folktale, Umpume was the oldest, but his younger brothers always made fun of him—until they went on a hunting trip in the forest and nearly lost their lives. Umpume’s gift as a drummer led them past the dangers of the forest and delivered them safely home. While traveling, Umpume was asked by each creature he met, “Where are you going?” and each time he answered, “I come from home, and I am going home.” When they reached home, the brothers saw Umpume for the gift he offered and were grateful to him for their deliverance. The wilderness is not some place we want to go, but we all have to go there some time. It may be after the death of a loved one, the death of a dream, or some other loss or disappointment. It is a place of agonizing and introspection but also of discovery. The angel of the Lord found Hagar in the wilderness as she was running from her mistress. That is often where the angel of rescue will find us. It is no wonder that great ministries are launched there. Jesus’ was. The question, then, is not whether we will go into the wilderness, but where we will go from our wilderness.
