WEEK OF GIVING: In 1977, Spokane Public Schools accepted a proposal from Parents for Alternative Education to organize the first Alternate Parent Participation Learning Experience, now known as the APPLE Program. APPLE parents are committed to volunteering in the classroom at least 90 hours a school year. The program is located at Garfield and Franklin elementary schools and is open to children of all abilities, grades 1-6, who reside within Spokane Public Schools boundaries at no extra charge. At Franklin, parent volunteers recently helped students install a community garden, which will be used by the entire school and surrounding neighborhood community. Assisted by an army of parents, student “journalists” documented the process, while designers planned the layout of the garden and apprentices worked with WSU Master Gardener volunteers to get seeds in the earth. We love our parent volunteers, said Franklin Principal Irene Gonzales. As part of Spokane Gives Week – April 12-19 – we’re highlighting the fine work of our many volunteers who give so graciously of their energy, talent and time.
