WELCOME BACK FALL 2013! WELCOME BACK! As a new academic year approaches we look forward to having students, friends, auditors and colleagues join us for classes, special lectures and exhibitions through the academic year. We are particularly happy to welcome three new faculty members and a Mellon post-doctoral fellow this fall who promise to broaden our department’s global reach, in keeping with our new undergraduate major requirements. Jennifer Pruitt (Ph.D. Harvard), who works on architecture and urbanism in Fatimid Cairo will offer our first survey of Islamic art and architecture (AH305). Dr. Yuhang Li, (Ph.D. Chicago) whose current research focuses on the material and visual culture of late imperial China and history of photography, will offer the survey of Early Chinese Art (AH307) and a proseminar on Gendered Material practice and the Cult of Guanyin (AH576). Longstanding affiliate Preeti Chopra (Ph.D. Berkeley), a specialist in architecture and urbanism of colonial and postcolonial India, joins our department full-time in the fall to teach Cities of Asia (AH379). Dr. Amanda Rogers (Ph.D. Emory) our Mellon Post-doctoral fellow is a specialist in contemporary Islamic Culture and will teach Art History 430: Topics in Visual Culture: Calligraphy to Graffiti: Art and Popular Culture in the Islamic World Please join us for The Annual Schewe Award Presentation and Welcome Reception to be held Friday, September 13th starting at 4:00 pm, in Elvehjem Room L140 with the reception following at the University Club.
