WELCOME TO ORCA FUN FACT FRIDAY! For our first week of Orca Fun Facts, lets start with an important distinction in the world of orcas - the ecotype: groups distinguished by differences in appearance, diet, behavior, acoustics, and genetics. It is estimated that there may be approximately 50,000 orcas worldwide and at least 10 known ecotypes. Three ecotypes are found in the North Pacific: Resident, Transient (Bigg’s) and Offshore populations. Resident orcas feed primarily on fish and especially on salmon, and include the Southern, Northern, and Alaskan orca communities. Both Fife and Holly, the two orcas now available for adoption in the U.S., are members of the Northern Resident community, which has about 270 individuals. The Southern Residents have only 77 individuals in their population, and WDC is currently working on addressing one of the main threats for Resident orcas – prey depletion. We are campaigning (us.whales.org/dams) to remove four dams on the Klamath River, which will increase the Klamath’s salmon population and boost the food available for the Southern Residents. Every Friday well send out an email with an orca fact. You can sign up to have these facts delivered right to your inbox by clicking here: https://confirmsubscription/h/j/7C4CC94C3B926848
