WELCOME TO THE JACKSON PRODUCE MARKET NEWS For the week commencing 3rd November 2014 jacksonproduce Summer Fruits Mangoes are easing in price as volume from the northern territory increases. Quality is improving as well and they are on special this week for only $2.50 each. Apricots have started. Did you know to allow Apricots to ripen before refrigerating, this helps develop the colour and sugar in the fruit. I will look to make them available next week. Cherries have started. Cherries are coming from Wandin Valley. Good colour & size, eating well. Coming next week. Top sellers Potatoes Brushed supply is still a problem. All product is coming from Atherton in FNQ, Product is short and price is reflective of that. Quality will remain good Bananas – Cavendish will increase again next week. I only see this as short term pain as other options such as peaches, nectarines, cherries and apricots become available. Oranges - Valencia will not be available next week due to a gap between the QLD and Southern growing regions. Will hopefully see some Valencia’s available again soon. Navel sales are very strong and quality is still great! 3kg for $5.25, that’s only $1.75/kg. Apples – Premium Apples are tightening in supply and expect this to worsen as we move toward the end of the year. Demand is still very good as the stone fruit is short and expensive. As soon as Stone fruit volumes pick up and prices ease we will see the pressure ease of both Bananas and Apples. Onions The move is to Queensland Brown Onions for the next week. All South Australian Brown and Red Onions are now finished and the only option from now is the QLD Product with its lighter coloured skin and sweeter flavour. Watermelon – quality is at its peak at present. New season product from North Queensland is coming in and quality and flavour is at its best. Quality & Price & Supply Asparagus is on the rise. This price increase won’t be massive but it will carry through for around two weeks as a few producers are struggling with water. Avocados are still in good supply. Prices are up a little but will improve. Beans – Green Beans remain value for money as the product flushes in the perfect growing conditions. Quality is great, and the price is there at only $4.10/kg. Blueberries - will have a two week price rise, but after these two weeks we should see a flush again. Product is still exceptional. Impulse and Exotics Cauliflower - Switching to Victorian Cauliflowers as they are superior to the locals which are now becoming heat affected. Working on the sizing also. Cucumbers – Continental Cucumbers will remain cheap for next week with quality at its best. $2.13 each. Limes should be starting to represent better value in the next few weeks. Passionfruit remain firm in price. Pineapples are still very in short supply. All sizes are short and getting to be quite expensive. It will be this way for another two weeks unfortunately. Rockmelons – have turned the corner and will firm in value for next week. Supply is becoming light and quality is dropping off. Snowpeas – I have switched to flat pack snow peas this week. This product is from Stanthorpe and is the premium harvest for the year. This increases the price but the quality is definitely worth it. Sweet Potatoes remain short and pricing firm. Most product is coming from the Bundaberg area and quantities are low. Quality remains good. Cherry Tomatoes, Grape Tomatoes are in good supply at present. Warmer weather is making the product flush in growth. Quality is excellent. Try the Heirloom multi coloured tomatoes in a 400g punnet to add colour to your dish. Cherry tomatoes are still under $2.00 a punnet. Weekly Specials Navel Oranges, 3 kg bags, $5.25 each Mangoes, $2.50 each Continental Cucumbers, $2.13 each Butternut Pumpkins, $1.53/kg Red Sweet Potatoes, $4.61/kg Free Range Eggs, $3.95 a dozen
