WELL-MEANING PERSON*: I love you Scotland. please dont go! YES VOTER** : Thanks, I love you too! But this is a critical political decision, please dont emotionally blackmail me! WMP: But (Insert sweeping generalisation about nationalism and/or platitude regarding unity here)!*** YV: I dont see independence as mutually exclusive with continuing to have a good relationship with you. Any pride in my national identity I may feel is of little importance compared to practical considerations - for example, despite devolution, we are likely to lose the Scottish NHS if the TTIP agreement proceeds. These issues are obfuscated by the mainstream media, but I encourage you to do your own research! WMP: ... YV: (Gives WELL-MEANING PERSON a big hug, turns to polling station with confidence, optimism and a hint of sadness) *Well-meaning Person is most likely an English/Welsh/Irish national and/or resident, but could be something else - a wealthy American celebrity for instance. **Yes Voter is most likely to be a Scottish national, but since eligibility for the referendum hinges on residency not nationality, they could also be one of 400,000 English nationals participating in the referendum, or a Pole, or an Ecuadorian, or whatever. *** This line has been ascribed to WELL-MEANING PERSON, though in fact another fictional stereotype called POORLY INFORMED NO VOTER has been known to say similar things ;)
