WELLNESS TIP OF THE DAY: What are free radicals and what do they - TopicsExpress

WELLNESS TIP OF THE DAY: What are free radicals and what do they do to your body? Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that have lost an electron. In an attempt to stabilize themselves they scavenge healthy molecules and steal electrons from them. This in turn causes more unstable molecules by oxidizing them (basically rusting them). Every day the DNA in each cell in your body is attacked by free-radicals about 10,000 times. Your body also produces anti-oxidants, molecules that have an extra electron to share and help heal the damaged cells. The problem is our body does not produce enough anti-oxidants to repair all of the damage that we do to our bodies. Eating a diet high in anti-oxidants will help repair damaged cells. Choose colorful fruits and vegetables, fresh or frozen to improve your changes of repairing your damaged cells that contribute to heart disease, some cancers, and to protect your eyes and brain.
