WENATCHEE — After a long goodbye, the Wenatchee Valley Symphony’s music director is sticking around after all. Nikolas Caoile, who putatively conducted his last concert for the ensemble April 12, reversed course afterward and signed a three-year extension to his contract. “We entered into a what-if conversation, the board and search committee and the musicians, and we made a turnaround,” Caoile said today from his office at Central Washington University, where he’s director of orchestras. “Somehow, the elements came together.” Key to those elements was scheduling. Caoile had told the symphony’s organizers he was stretched thin by traveling to weekly rehearsals in Wenatchee, while also doing similar duty as principal conductor of the Salem Chamber Orchestra in Oregon and maintaining his family life in Ellensburg. But rehearsals for the season-ending concert in April happened on a shortened schedule, thanks to various spring break calendar shifts at CWU and Wenatchee Valley College. Caoile and the board determined that if that schedule could be applied in the future, he’d be able to stay on. “We had success in that concert, even with a compressed schedule,” Caoile said. “So that got us thinking this may work in both parties’ favor.” The symphony announced Caoile’s re-hiring in a notice today on its website. “His chemistry with the orchestra is powerful and we are delighted that he will continue as our artistic leader,” board president Teri Snyder wrote. Caoile, 36, came on as the symphony’s music director in 2010. The symphony plans to hold its first “FanFare” season inauguration event at 7 p.m. June 12 at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center, with Caoile announcing the 2014-2015 concert lineup.
