WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE: On July 25th the CDFA confirmed the second case of equine WNV in California during 2013. The 10 year old Quarter Horse gelding from Sacramento County had not been vaccinated. The horse had neurologic signs, became recumbent and was euthanized. The other confirmed case involved a mare in Stanislaus County that was also unvaccinated and had to be euthanized. EHV-1 / EHM STATUS: On July 5th a 4 year old Quarter Horse mare in Contra Costa County displaying neurologic signs of the neuropathogenic strain of Equine Herpesvirus -1 was euthanized due to the severity of her clinical signs. Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) was confirmed.
