WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS INS: Antony Golec (From ACL contract to HAL contract), Dean Bouzanis (Carlisle United), Vitor Saba (Brescia), Brendan Hamill (Seongnam), Romeo Castelen (RKC Wallwijk), Seyi Adeleke (Lazio) OUTS: Adam D’Apuzzo (Retired), Michael Beauchamp (PTT Rayong), Jerome Polenz (Sarpsborg), Aaron Mooy (Melbourne City), Tahj Minniecon (Rockdale City Sun), Josh Barresi (Newcastle Jets), Youssouf Hersi (Perth Glory), Jerrad Tyson (Sun Pegasus), Shinji Ono (Consadole Sapporo), Dean Heffernan (Bulli) PRE-SEASON RESULTS (excluding ACL): P 6 W 4 L 2 Defeated Macarthur Rams 1-0; Canberra FC 1-0; APIA Leichhardt 1-0 and Al Jazira 2-1. Lost to East Riffa 2-1. FFA CUP: lost to Adelaide City 1-0. LAST YEAR: so close, yet so far again. But while Western Sydney didn’t produce a miracle winning streak again, they proved that there would be no such thing as second year syndrome at Wanderland. THIS YEAR: Popovic has put the broomstick through the squad that he built – and if not for the evidence of this current ACL run, some may wonder how the Wanderers will go. But with his ability to extract the most out of his players and his impressive transfer track record so far, things bode well for another concerted push from the club in their third season. Shinji Ono is tough to replace but there were glimpses of genuine gold from Saba in Seoul on Wednesday, while Romeo Castelen a vastly experienced Dutchman with international and Eredivise experience, comes in for Hersi. TRADING GRADE: par. So far, it’s been Popovic’s way or the highway. It’s worked, so it should be fascinating if this overhaul after two years, with faith also being shown in the club’s up-and-coming youngsters, suitably revitalises the squad.
