WESTRALIA Westralia (2) Australian Built 1929-61 8,108 gross tons, 4,717 net. Lbd: 4311 x 602 x 28. Steel twin screw motorship built by Harland & Wolff, Glasgow for this concern. As a passenger vessel carried 440 in three classes on the Melbourne - Adelaide - Fremantle run. With twin diesels (6750 bhp) she was capable of 16 knots. Commissioned as Armed Merchant Cruiser in January 1940. Served mainly in Indian Ocean and Pacific Islands until March 1943. Recommissioned and converted as Landing Ship (Infantry) . Whilst undergoing refit at Sydney in 1946 was called by the Navy and spent 2 years trooping/transportation the Army of Occupation in Japan. As conversion restarted was again called upon for service in the Mediterranean eventually handed back to owners in 1950. 1959 sold to Asian & Pacific Shipping Co, Fiji for service as a sheep carrier. Renamed Delfino in 1959 and Woolambi in 1960. Scrapped by Japanese shipbreakers from December 1961 Photo Credits:Unknown
