WHAT A BARGAIN ----------------------- What an excellent example was Sohaib ibn Rumi (ra). Sohaib was a sahabi who was a roman who came to Makkah having escaped a life of slavery. He became the representative of an aristocrat and engaged in trading and became quite wealthy. Fast forward a number of years when the Muslims were migrating to Madinah, Sohaib was caught by the Quraish. One night, he managed to get hold of a weapon and sought to escape. His captors responded by saying By God, we shall not let you escape from us with your life and money. You came to Mecca weak and poor and you have acquired what you have acquired whilst with us and now you want to get away.. What would you say if I leave you my wealth? interrupted Sohaib. Would you get out of my way? Yes, they answered. Sohaib described the place in his house in Mecca where he had left the money, and they allowed him to go. When Sohaib reached Quba, just outside Madina, it is said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) saw him approaching whilst sitting with the sahabah and said, Your transaction has been fruitful, O Abu Yahya. Your transaction has been fruitful. It is said that the following verse was then revealed: the glorious verse was revealed: And of mankind is he who sell himself, seeking the pleasure of Allah And Allah is full of kindness to (His) slaves [2:207]. [At-Tabari; Tafsir ibn Kathir] Sohaib is also the man to finish the salah which was interrupted with the assassination of Umar (ra) and who also led Umars janazah. Just like the sahabah, there will come a time where we Muslims in the West will be tested with being asked to give up all our wealth in exchange for holding on to our deen. May Allah grant us the tawfiq to deal with it as Sohaib radiAllahuan dealt with it.
