WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP -- From the ANNALS OF THE FRUGAL TRAVELER: When I simultaneously ran out of hair care and soap products in the bathroom a couple weeks ago, I rummaged through the drawer and found a cache of the little hotel products that I’d come home with from trips over the past couple (?) years which I had squirreled away. I have been using them up as a way to stretch my dollars and to clear out a bathroom drawer. Today featured the last of the Oatmeal Soap with real oaty fibers in the cake. It came from the Scots Hotel in Tiberias. Because I’ve been pulling them from the drawer arbitrarily, the results have been uneven -- resulting in sort of a “hair of the day” effect. Some products have been luxurious imports supplied to swank hotels that I have gained (mostly through the thrifty expertise of the family Travel Agent). These products have nice packaging so I feel like I’m somewhere really special as I open them up. Some have been thin and utilitarian with soapy smells from unmemorable hotel stays, and still others have been acceptable and functional products with in-between results. They have labels that say Hampton Inn, or Holiday Inn Express. The overall effect has been that the past couple weeks have been a sort of long strange trip. When I told Maureen about my strategy, she playfully took a deep whiff as she walked by and said I smelled great. I enjoyed the attention. I’m running low now, so it’s back to Target and the hair aisle where I’ll find myself wanting to get back to my trip.
