WHAT A YEAR 2014: MAY! ZAMBIANS BRING HOME ELO POINTS - KAYONDE CROSSES THE 2300 BARRIER (By Andrew Kayonde-21st may, 2014) Other than the prize good money, rated tournaments such as the Zimbabwe Prestige, Capabalanca Open (GM and IM Norm Sections), Steinitz Open and CUCA have one very important side benefit - fide elo points! These keep track of ones performance over time and officially measure something close to ones real strength - for Africans in particular. After a string of 3 extremely competitive events in Zimabbwe, South Africa and Angola, the team of Zambian Chess Titans brought home a total of 54 elos from abroad - gaining an enormous 60.1 and shedding off only 6.5. Below are the individual contributions from each individual that represented Zambia in the period: 2411 Daniel Jere -6.5 (CUCA, Angola) 2280 Andrew Kayonde +36.9 ( Zimbabwe Prestige - Zimbabwe, Capablanca - RSA) 2248 Chitumbo Mwali +1.5 (Capablanca - RSA) 2045 Kela Kaulule +21.6 ( Steinitz - RSA) With this performance Zambia acquired one more player, Andrew Kayonde, who now joins the other four Zambians (Simutowe, Jere, Chumfwa and Bwalya) in the 2300+ Club. To follow how the progress of any player in the period go to fide , click on ratings and search for the player you are interested in.
