WHAT ARE DEAD WORKS? Whenever we do (keep) Gods Law with the thought that these good deeds will make us acceptable to God, these are dead works. The New Testament teaches exactly the opposite: only faith in Jesus Christ - not our works - can put us into a right relationship with God. We cannot earn a relationship with God through our merits. Paul explains this perfectly in Galatians 3. Dead works can also be described as the believers efforts to make themselves righteous or holy. This usually reveals itself when Christians set out to establish their own righteousness, based on their own standards and/or performance. It always results in pride and arrogance, when the performing of certain good, or religious activities elevates an individual in their own eyes, and often in the eyes of others. These certainly dont impress the Lord, Who knows our motives and sees all our works of righteousness as dirty rags. God only recognizes our faith in Christ.
