WHAT CAUSES PEOPLE TO DEVELOP? PART 2 Here are my thoughts which I think is progressive in that they are always innovating. I think the factors which cause people to develop happen over a long period of time but can also be consciously hastened. The fact is any country which values human life and therefore decides to do the following will eventually develop: 1. Form a Republic and be ruled by Law. 2. Emphasizes the importance of being organized. 3. Develops technology for production and for general use. 4. Innovates in all aspects – leadership, management, manufacturing, production, distribution and so on. If the above is true then what causes a country to decide to be ruled by law, emphasize being organized, develop technology and innovate? Life is such that at some point people begin to question why do we do a particular thing in a particular way. Why can’t we do this differently? They get an epiphany and begin to change the way things are done. That enlightenment or desire to do something differently is part of evolution. When a number of those people meet at the same time, the multiplied effect could be enormous. For instance at one point, Adam Smith wrote the Wealth of Nations and people realized the importance of the division of labor and specialization. Add the effects of developing the steam engine and electricity and the multiplied effect is huge – countries can industrialize. All social aspects of human life go through evolutionary processes. For instance if you learn a particular topic, it could be difficult from the beginning. But with time the subject becomes second nature. Over time one can even forget that the subject was foreign or difficult at a particular point in time. The good news is that these evolutionary processes can be taught and can be learned. So the Chinese manufactured it through their cultural revolution. So did South Korea and to an extent Singapore. All these are good news for Africa. It means whatever causes a group of people to develop, that enlightenment, that desire, the ability to take risks, the ability to think of solutions, the ability to place a higher premium on human life, the ability to question leadership demand good leadership can all be taught and learned. Which means we need to overhaul our educational systems, we need to set standards for all segments of organizations, we need to operate in such a way that we are automatically raising thinkers. Those who will not only question why things are the way they are, but develop solutions. In a sense, we need to package the whole of why people develop into a conscious institution of a cultural revolution.
