WHAT DID THE UDP DID FOR AMADOU SANNEH? Sam Phateys comments on this issue and others regarding the udp and the Gambia as a whole are very welcome as we strive to build a democratic system where everyone will be able to make observations and comments as they see fit. Thats the beauty of free speech . This comments are unfortunate not on the context of criticizing the leadership of the party, but this is a guy i consider the feature of the Gambia. I think Sam should have understood the the challenge we face as gambians, and see this issue as a Gambian and not that of udp alone. Amadou went to jail because of his stand to end injustice in the Gambia as a whole and not for any particular group or tribe. This is a very humble man who has achieved almost every thing that any of us can dream in life, a good profession, happy family etc, and put all that aside to fight tyranny so all of us can live freely in that beautiful country, not for wealth, fame or anything. He was fighting the battle that we all retreated from and leave them to fight, we should see it that way as gambians and together join the udp with ideas to champion his release. The arrests and detentions of our members has been relegated to it is a udp issue which is very unfortunate . Until we realize that our destiny and feature as gambians are intricately linked, and see things in that context, we are bound to fail. The party always stood and defend its members through the legal system which is the only tool available to us, now one might argue that is not sufficient but until the Gambian people are ready to be lead to the streets, this is the venue we will address this issues. Every member of the udp enter politics knowing beforehand that they might be tortured, jailed or killed for their stand against the Jammeh regime and the same applies to any other gambian whether udp not that the Jammeh regime see as a treat to their existence . Dictatorships every where survive on three things, fear, starvation and division. Out of the three the most important one is division. If we as gambians can forget our difference and join hands, we can end the fear in our people to stand up to him, and end the believe among our that they have to support the Jammeh regime in order to survive, and thereby take our country. Without understanding the concept of divided and rule, and standing against any form of it, our struggle continues. I thank you for sharing your thoughts. But let us forget the me, you, they and them for now and start using WE as we are all in this together. As I write this short comments Amadou sannehs daughter is graduating today in Florida. I call on you Mr Sam Phatey and all comrades in the struggle to wish her a very bright future. .
