WHAT DO I GET FROM DAILY EXERCISE? Everybody knows you should exercise at least a little every day- but why? I want to give you my main benefits from exercise: #1: EXERCISE HELPS ME CONTROL HEALTH DISEASE Before I started exercising regularly, I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type II Diabetes, and sleep Apnea. Along with a very strict change in my daily diet, exercise has helped me BEAT those diseases! I use exercise now as a shield to keep these diseases away as much as possible. #2: EXERCISE HELPS ME CONROL MY WEIGHT I spent so many years as an overweight person, actually being more fit and at a reasonable weight feels really good! Although you cant out-exercise a bad diet, I use exercise to MAINTAIN my desired weight, which helps my health as well. Although I spend about 2 hours per day working out, that is not necessary for maintaining your health. All you need is 30-40 minutes per day! #3: EXERCISE IMPROVES MY MOOD NOTHING- I repeat- NOTHING can give me an attitude boost as much as a good workout. Sometimes its hard to get started, but the feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment you get from a hard workout is unmatched! Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that will leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Plus, sometimes its nice to focus totally on a workout and emotionally get away from the daily issues we all face! #4: EXERCISE ACTUALLY BOOSTS MY ENERGY Let me tell you- the energy you feel after a good hard swim workout is amazing! Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. Sometimes if I am feeling a little lethargic at home, I will take a walk with my dog, and my energy levels are picked up greatly. #5: EXERCISE HELPS ME SLEEP BETTER I have never really had a problem getting to sleep, but after a day of tough workouts, I sleep like a baby! Be careful here, however- dont exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to fall asleep. #6: EXERCISE CREATES CHALLENGES FOR ME I am a person that likes challenges in my life. Exercise builds in that challenge for me- sometimes the challenge is just to finish the workout, sometimes the challenge is to finish it faster, and sometimes the challenge is too just keep breathing! Being in better shape actually also creates more opportunities to get out and do more things with my fitness. For example, if I hadnt been exercising the last 3 years, I never would have been able to complete some of those long hikes up a 14,000 ft. mountain in Colorado! Exercise allows me to be more adventurous! The bottom line on exercise- JUST DO IT! Make it fun, make it challenging, and make it a daily habit! Your heart and your family will thank you for it.
