WHAT EVERY CENTRAL CATHOLIC FAN WANTS TO KNOW: IS HUNTER PETLANSKY REALLY COMING HERE? NUGGET: The Central Catholic High School (Modesto, California) football program is looking for a quarterback after winning last year’s state title, and it could already have the thrower who could handle the position for the next three years. Word on the parochial school circuit is that Central Catholic is about to land a difference-maker at a position that makes all the difference: Folks in Stockton are saying Hunter Petlansky is transferring to Modesto’s premier parochial program. Haven’t gotten hold of Hunter yet – though we love his 3.71 GPA – but his NCSA Athletic Recruiting site has him listed as a Central Catholic player. He has 4.65 in the 40, a 4.4-second 5-10-5 shuttle, a bench of 290 an a 32-inch vertical leap. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder was explosive in his freshman year at St. Mary’s of Stockton – check out this tape youtube/watch?v=F0PARUUNHXA — and looks pretty sharp running as well as throwing. (For some fun, check out his li’l brother Cole paying youth football with the Ripon Christian Knights … youtube/watch?v=CWcwNSQDuXQ). Central Catholic had senior Garrett Ardis taking snaps last fall, and he threw for 1,612 yards and TDs, with 11 picks. Junior Donovin Townsend got some snaps, too, but was more of a runner and played in some goal-line situations – but he has a valuable role on defense and could be an asset playing multiple roles on offense. Petlansky was a stat machine playing on St. Mary’s unbeaten junior varsity team, taking shotguns snaps as well as snaps under center. He also ran some ‘read option’ and had backs lined up in the ‘I’ as well as split to each side of him. Why is that important? He obviously played with a very big playbook with plenty of formations, heady stuff for a freshman playing up at JV. If he does land at Central Catholic – his Facebook page says he lives near campus, so transportation isn’t going to be an issue – it puts the Raiders in line for a second straight state title. The Raiders lose a ton of talent that was recognized on Black Hat’s All-Region Team – running backs Rey Vega and Ray Lomas were MaxPreps’ co-Players of the Year; tight end John Mundt is heading off to the University of Oregon; Blake Escobar was a banger at linebacker; receiver Nate Loya is going to University of San Diego; defensive back Joey Abbate led the state with interceptions – but there is a strong core of juniors returning as well as a talented crop of sophomores and freshmen. Petlansky would have the potential to be a first-of-a-kind at Central Catholic, and that’s difficult at a parochial power that has been winning titles for decades. Black Hat’s first exposure to Central Catholic was in 1981, when it beat Benicia 8-7 for a section crown – broke Black Hat’s heart, since Benicia is our alma mater. Central Catholic has had some fine throwing QBs – Rueben Ramos and Dylan Swartz come right to mind, as well as others with good wheels – but Petlansky’s size, skills and ability to run such a multiple-set offense would set a new standard. If Petlanksy does land at Central Catholic, you know that Black Hat and thousands of others are going to be in the same place Sept. 6: That’s when Central Catholic visits St. Mary’s, which has a State Watch quarterback in Kalen Parrish. Wow! Better get your tickets early for that. What a potential Homecoming?
