WHAT EXACTLY IS SIN--and why does it matter? Sin is lawlessness - TopicsExpress

WHAT EXACTLY IS SIN--and why does it matter? Sin is lawlessness (I John 3:4). Long ago, I had a friend who was new in ministry and dead-sure about every opinion he voiced. As we were about the same age and equally green, I nevertheless yielded to him in matters about which he was adamant. This was one of them. Again and again, I heard him announce, Sin is the transgression of the law! as though he had made some major discovery. (Ive long since forgotten the context for his pronouncement, but will not forget the force with which he delivered it!) He would often say, The Bible has one definition for sin and this was it. Then I began reading the Bible for myself, and making discoveries. Scripture has additional definitions for sin... Whatsoever is not of faith is sin, says Romans 14:23. To one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin (James 4:17). All unrighteousness is sin... (I John 5:17). When a friend asked recently, I suggested that the best way to think of sin may simply be anything that displeases our Lord. Our best prayer is What wilt Thou have me to do? as voiced by Saul of Tarsus outside Damascus (Acts 22:10). We recall Jesus teaching us to pray Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10) The Lords disciples should not go through life focused on sin. I cant think of a more perfect recipe for misery and failure. What would please Thee, Lord? is a far better guide. For that, we have the Scriptures and the indwelling Holy Spirit. So He has not left us in the dark and on our own. Now, as you and I go forth to serve the Lord Jesus, let us begin with the question of a servant: What do you want me to do for you? (see Luke 18:41) There is no greater thing in life than to please Jesus.
