WHAT GIVES ME UP, as we think about today, April 4th, the 46th - TopicsExpress

WHAT GIVES ME UP, as we think about today, April 4th, the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. is this: That there are organizations like SAAB @SAABHQ, which just had one of the best conferences Ive attended in my life for young Black and Latino males in the Detroit area this past weekend. It is the brainchild of Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe who is based at the University of Toledo. We need to stop saying there are no leaders out there, simply because we do not see them on tv or hear them on the radio, or they are not all over social media. Every single speaker and workshop leader SAAB brought in was dynamic, brilliant, challenging, visionary, and doing real work wherever they are in the country. These young Black and Latino male attendees came from nearly 20 states and the conversations I had with them before and after my own speech there left me so filled I am still thinking about them a week later, and certainly eager to stay in touch with as many of them as possible. So I do not mourn Dr. King being dead and some bygone era although I will forever honor and respect the Civil Rights Movement. But I also think daily about what we have now and what we must do, in our times.
