WHAT HAPPENS IN THE GRAVE ??? The questioning by the angels......... When a person is placed in his grave and his family leave him, two angels, Munkar and Nakeer would descend, and they will SCREAM at him; shocking and surprising him. Rasool Allah (Salla Allahu ‘aleihi wa sallam) said that their voice is like THUNDER, and their eyes are like LIGHTENING; and they will have a whip in their hands, which can turn a person to DUST with one blow. They would ask us three questions: Who is your Lord? What is your deen? And who is this man (showing a picture of Muhammad (Sallah Allahu ‘aleihi wa sallam))? [Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4753; Ahmad, 18063 – this version was narrated by him. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1676] This is the test we should prepare for. How much time do we spend on school and university examinations? How much time is spent on preparation for a job interview or company presentation? The outcomes of all these things are, in reality, beyond our control; and on top of that, their fruits are temporary, because a day will come when we will have to leave everything behind. Yet, we virtually spend our whole life running after things which will perish. And now ask yourself, how much time do you spend in preparing for an exam whose marks or grade will determine Your Hereafter, which is for ever? Now, you might think to yourself – ‘these questions are really easy. Why would I need to spend time and effort on them? I will simply say that my lord is Allah, My deen is Islam, and this man is Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘aleihi wa sallam)!’ Is it as simple as that? You see, our hearts are like an empty CD. Whatever we write on it, that is what will play out when you put it in the CD player. If you record English lectures on a CD and then put it in the CD player, will you hear Chinese? Similarly, if our life was spent according to what pleased our Lord Allah, and Allah (SwT) alone, and we didn’t care what anyone other than Allah (SwT) thought, then when the angels will ask us: “Who is your Lord?”, we can reply with ease: “My Lord is Allah.” May Allah grant us the ability to get all the answers correct in our grave. Ameen.
