WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ADVANCE DIRECTIVES ARE IGNORED is the subject of a sobering piece by Paula Span in June 24 newoldage blog in NYTimes. There is a great increase in awareness of the need for these directives, and the accompanying medical power of attorney. However, as the piece points out, there are often disconnects. The piece also speaks about POLST: physician orders for life sustaining treatments, which are gaining momentum in a number of states. Bottom line, make sure people are aware of these documents.
