WHAT HAS THE US NAVY DONE FOR AFRICANS LATELY? Compatriots, My teacher colleague and comrade, Tchaiko Kwayana commented on the enclosed post: Wigs are OKAY but not our naturally kinky hair!! (huffingtonpost/2014/08/26/navy-natural-hair_n_5715265.html). Kofi Nyaako The issue is not about Hair. It is about Care. AFRICANS shouldnt be part of Uncle Sams war machine in the first place. Ask the question: what happened to African Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, war veterans? Are they socially and economically better off? Clarence Warren Kofi Nyaako, I agree with your basic premise and would suggest that no American should participate in American war machine, but this perception of African Americans as aliens in this country goes far beyond the military. It is a major affront to ones humanity if your natural hair is judged as abnormal and needing cover. Kofi Nyaako Clarence, of course the US navy’s reaction on this matter is nothing short of scandalous. But I am interested in its full social-economic ramifications. My aim on FB is to discourse relevant issues which impinge on the full development of African people worldwide. So, in the context of the biased and prejudicial discrimination against the wearing of natural hair in the US navy, I am in full support of the soldier sister. However, a bigger philosophical puzzle arises. This relates the historically correct analysis which rejects any military collaboration between us, still enslaved and racially discriminated Africans, and our ballistic oppressors. It is in this sense I question the social and economic positioning of African people in the armies of imperialist, war-mongering America and Europe. My position has been echoed by Mohammed Ali: No Vietcong called me a nigger; Al Haj Shabazz who said Africans have no business in the white oppressors armies; Martin Luther King who questioned the use of poor Africans and whites in the Vietnam War; and many victims of US and European military imperialism in Africa worldwide: CIA-led coup that ousted Dr. Nkrumah, 1966; cynical killing of Lumumba; cynical ousting of Maurice Bishop, Michael Manley, Gadaffi, etc. This is the basis of my injunction, “The issue is not about Hair. Further, in the context of the clearly planned, open-season, killing of Africans in US streets today, by racist white armed forces, I ask: What has the US navy done for Africans lately! (Tchaiko’s post has inspired me to write a full article on this issue for publication). Regards. WHAT DO YOU THINK? A destitute African War Veteran in the streets of the so-called Big Apple.
