WHAT HAVE WE BECOME? I’m reading a book, “We Band of Angles’, about the Army and Navy nurses assigned to the Philippines at the start of WW II and the horrors that they endured after the Empire of Japan invaded and conquered the US forces there. The Philippines was a choice assignment for nurses and military forces before the War. It was a tropical paradise where everyone had houseboys, maids, chefs, gardeners and tailors looking after their every need. Beautiful swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts, bowling alleys and baseball fields were in abundance. The place was full of the sweet smell of gardenias, purple bougainvillea, palm groves, and orchids. The duty was easy, romance was intense, and colonial life was a million miles away from the thought of war. Just past noon on December 8, the Japanese attacked the island and life changed substantially for the worse anyone could imagine. In a matter of minutes the Jap Zeros bombed and strafed the squadron of U.S. planes left like sitting ducks on the runway reducing the squadron of planes to seven….SEVEN! The oil dump was on fire, barracks were leveled, the hangars and machine shops were leveled, and wounded and dead lay everywhere. If there had been back then truth spinning cable news channels, the plethora of critical, toxic FB posts that we have to endure today, and the numerous “know it all” Monday morning quarterbacks that exist today, can you imagine the criticism Roosevelt, Marshall, Hap Arnold, MacArthur and Nimitz would have been subjected to? It would likely have extended the War in the Pacific!!
