WHAT IS A SYMBOL? Simply put, a symbol is an object that can be perceived by at least one of the five senses that represents a concept that is not easily explained in words. The flags below are symbols representing various nations of the world. Symbols generally have deeper meanings than signs. Why is the distinction between signs and symbols important, especially as it pertains to the Bible? Because understanding the distinction facilitates a greater understanding of the Bible. If I know what a sign is, then when I read a passage or a prophecy that specifically refers to a sign, then I know that it must occur the way it was spoken. If I understand it to be symbolic, then I must think much more broadly as it pertains to understanding what was written.
