WHAT IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH, REALLY? Every day since the Paris Charlie Ebdo attack I have been debating with myself about the concept of freedom of speech everybody suddenly is so hysterical about. We dont even have freedom of speech in Australia, for Gods sake! I have come to the conclusion, which Im sure will be most unpopular, that the whole thing comes down to human decency, including Charlie Ebdo’s. If a friend was to say to me, hey Keith, I really dont like you doing this so often, or I really dont like you saying this so often, would I continue doing it? I dont think so! We know that Muslims revere their Mohammed and Christians revere their Jesus. So why poke fun, and sometimes very bad and distasteful fun, at either? I cannot find it my heart or mind to agree that Charlie Ebdo has the right of freedom of speech to purposely “insult and provoke” with the sole purpose of making money. I hate religions and have plenty of opinions about both Islam and Christianity, in particular the foul and dirty little men that run the shows. Certainly criticize them, expose them but, much as I dislike either religion, why ridicule what they regard as sacred and particularly when done for money. Why purposely insult anyone with anything that is dear to them? That is not an example of a better world in which we wish to harmoniously and peacefully live together. Indeed, I see this as purposely and willfully provoking disharmony and trouble. Dont get me wrong. The Paris attacks were much more than disgusting and to me it shows the rottenness of religion and what religious fanatics are capable of and no doubt, Islam is a fanatical religion. There are 6 million Muslims in France - if even 1 million of them had marched up to Charlie Ebdos offices to protest peacefully, that would have made a positive impression and more than likely would have had a positive result. One statement by an Islamic cartoonist was so true... Poking fun at Islam is ok, but when you poke fun at the Jews you are anti-Semitic (anti-Jewish). 15 January 2015
