WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE YOUTHS WORK ETHIC! This weekend my son and I were going to spend it doing yard work. However, I decided that if I hired another two bodies I could finish everything in one day. So I went to my local Home Depot and hired two young men; 20 year old and a 26 years old. Within two hours the 20 year old was tossing in the proverbial towel. All he had done up to that point was use my weed-eater to cut the dead dry grass off my fence. My initial gut reaction was to dismiss him, however, I decided to give him some words of encouragement by explaining that my 15 year old son and I (38 year old man) were working along his side. He reluctantly found motivation out of being outworked by a 15 year old and myself. However, 1 1/2 hours later he completely gave up and refused to do anything else. Instead of getting upset, I just laughed and told him that Americas streets are not covered in money, just there for people to come and easily pick it up. I continued to, laughingly, lecture this young man by explaining that in order to get ahead in life it will require hard work and unwavering dedication. In retrospect, I must say that it is our responsibility as parents to teach work ethic. My father is not a perfect man by any means, but he taught me how to work hard. Along with that work ethic he also taught me that no one owes me anything. For those reasons I have never felt entitled to anything I didnt earn. I pass on those values to my children. I even go as far as telling them that what I have amassed is Ediths and mine only. I want them to go out and create their own legacy not live off of mine. I applaud all of you who put in a hard days work!
