WHAT IS THE “GAWAD PAMBANSANG ALAGAD NG SINING”? The National Artist Award was established in 1972 as a way of recognizing Filipinos “who have distinguished themselves and made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and letters.” In 2003, a rethinking of the significance of this award vis-a-vis national development led to the issuance of into Executive Order (E.O.) 236 raising the National Artist Award to the level of Cultural Order, fourth in the order of precedence among orders and decorations conferred by the National Government. Henceforth, it is now equal in rank to the Order of National Scientists and the Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan. HONORS AND PRIVILEGES The following privileges are provided to those conferred with the Order of National Artists: 1. The rank and title of “National Artist,” as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines; 2. The National Artist medallion and citation; 3. Lifetime emolument as well as material and physical benefits comparable in value to those received by the highest officers of the land such as: a. a cash award of One hundred Thousand Pesos (PhP100,000.00), net of taxes for living awardees; b. a cash award of Seventy Five Thousand Pesos (PhP75,000.00), net of taxes for posthumous awardees, payable to the heirs; c. a monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits; d. life insurance coverage for awardees who are still insurable; e. arrangements and expenses for a state funeral. 4. A place of honor, according to precedence in protocol at national state functions, and acknowledgment at cultural events. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION The National Artist Award is given to: 1. Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last ten (10) years prior to his/her nomination as well as those who died after the establishment of the awards in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of death. 2. Artists who, through the content and form of their works, have contributed in building a Filipino sense of nationhood. 3. Artists who have pioneered in a mode of creative expression or style thus earning distinction and making an impact on succeeding generation of artists. 4. Artists who have created a substantial and significant body of works and/or consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their art form thus enriching artistic expression or style. 5. Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through: a. prestigious national and/or international recognition; b. critical acclaim an/or reviews of their works; c. respect and esteem from peers.
