WHAT NATION STATE ? - INDUSTAN??? Well the re-mapping of the countries of the world from a Hindu perspective was a popular element in teaching Cultural Heritage of India in the US to children of Indian origins even as early as 2002. For example, if Sudan is Shiv-Dan, then Denmark is Dhenu Marg!!! Which reminds me the interesting efforts of the Jats to draw their lineage from Denmark, and going by genetic studies the actual origins of the Rajputs being Scythians from Central Asia and getting legitimized by Brahmins by drawing their lineage as Surya, Agni and Chandra vanshis. So, the idea of Industan - is a geographical concept, and most of us are migrants/invaders into Industan and by this calculation the actual residents are the marginalized Adivasis !!! The larger question - was India ever a nation state whether in the form of Jambudwipa or Greater India - taking this discourse and debate raised by eminent indigenous Indologists and historians such as late Devahuti the idea of India is so, so recent... and I ditto Sanjeev Sanyals description that we all can be described as Genetic cocktail - the religious identities come into play so much later in relation to the geo politics of a nations history. I hope that politicization of culture stops, otherwise there can only be social chaos and disequilibrium. Secondly, if one looks at the history books produced by NCERT for the middle school, they are really good. Instead of taking periods in a simplistic linear manner, you now have issue based periodical studies that factor in comparisons. For example, early 19th c and the view of what was happening in different parts of the world. I hope this is not changed.
