WHAT, NO CIGARETTES! (1945) Part 1 (conclusion next Thursday) Edgar Kennedy & family are smokin hot funny in this 2-reel RKO romp. When Uncle Wilbur (Jimmy Conlin) visits, the family must find cigarettes to appease his addiction, but they are in short supply because of the War. While considered politically incorrect today, this short is equal parts historical and hysterical. There really was a cigarette shortage during the war, caused by shifting wartime priorities due to scarcity of manpower, machinery and distribution facilities. The heavily addicted really did struggle with withdrawal in sometimes desperate and curious ways. - and its really quite hysterical watching Edgar and his screen family turn a sordid addiction into a fanciful farce.
