WHAT SACK PROBLEM ? The Miami Dolphins faced the Atlanta Falcons this evening and as a fan, I cant help but to be excited about the offense. The defense is a different story. The latter quarters revealed some talent as well as to what in my opinion are, over rated defensive players. Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill looked sharp, crisp and unhesitating, like a man whos been given a new playbook... oh wait! He actually has. The play selection combined short quick passes with the read option and regular running plays which only involved running back Lamar Miller and kept the Atlanta defense guessing a bit. There wasnt a single QB sack during the one drive on which Tannehill played. The Dolphins opening drive, which consisted of 10 plays and went for 74 yards, ended with a touchdown pass from Tannehill to Brandon Gibson. The defense once again, revealed the unveiling of their brand new same old stuff... the inability to stop the run and plenty of missed tackles in the backfield were back . It was clear that yet once more, the players seemed to be going for the flashy and exciting plays, while perhaps neglecting the basic fundamentals of football, tackling. There were also a number of plays on which the defensive backs were going for the big play, instead of securing the tackle, and were caught out of position as a result after they failed to intercept or knock down the ball. These issues are not new and actually precede the hiring of defense coordinator Coyle, but because, under Coyle, the defense hasnt been as good against the run either, the flopped flash play seem to take on a heightened sense of catastrophe. Don Jones, who is rumored to substitute Reshad Jones (no relation), showed enough speed to cover opposing receivers, but lacked technique in his second year. He was being picked on throughout his time on the field and while he kept up with the WR most of the times, he rarely turned to look fort he ball, with the stricter rules this year, will surely find Jones on the wrong side of a penalty call. The road traveled by the offense though, along with noticeably developed Tannehill, is too much of a highlight for it to get lost in concerns about the defense. It is pre-season, but it is great to watch the Dolphins again.
