WHAT THE RAIN REMINDS US OF ((-: In November 2011, then board member Dr. Mac Napulan has exposed the Miagao slaughterhouse in his privilege speech in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. He said: “The Miag-ao slaughterhouse has dismal facilities with its waste matters and waste materials seeping into the town’s drainage, contaminated surrounding deep wells of hundreds of nearby homes and eventually to Tumagboc River.” In that speech, the future Mayor of Miagao said the municipal government-operated Miagao slaughterhouse is seen as the culprit of the various diseases the residents living in the vicinity are suffering. He had received a lot of complaints from residents who claimed they have been experiencing different discomforts for the past 20 years due to the unsanitary practice of the slaughterhouse. He had with him a signed petition from the residents who claimed they suffer cough and asthma attacks due to the dirty air and bad odor coming from the slaughterhouse. He testified that the slaughterhouse is not only killing the residents surrounding the facility but all of those who consume the meats that were slaughtered in “the unsanitary and environment destructive slaughterhouse.” He added he personally investigated at the site after he received the complaint initiated by 25 families. He found out the slaughterhouse has been operating without waste water treatment posing environmental and health hazards. “The Miag-ao slaughterhouse has dismal facilities with its waste matters and waste materials seeping into the town’s drainage, contaminated surrounding deep wells of hundreds of nearby homes and eventually to Tumagboc River,” Dr. Napulan concluded. With the emergence of the rainy season once more this month of October (in fact it is raining as this is written now), the rain will eventually allow the overflow of sewage or will seep deeper to the ground and will cause environmental and health hazard if we are to believe our Mayor. But looking back, how many had died in Miagao due to the contamination of the towns drainage system, the deep wells and the Tumagboc river from the waste matters and materials from the slaughterhouse operating during the administration of the Floreses? The rain always reminds us of that historic privilege speech. ((-:
