WHAT TO DO WITH A HALF CUP OF NUTS I just ran into one of my two favorite high school math teachers at the Bulldog Restaurant a few minutes ago. Had a great, albeit short, visit with Mr. Dugger, or Don as he has become so insistent in being called. And I still cant bring myself to call a mentor by his first name. Sorry, Mr. Dugger. The timing could not have been any better though. Just a brief visit and I was reminded of all the math skills I had ever learned from the master mathematician and so quickly forgot. Heres the deal. I cracked my 2014-15 pecan crop this afternoon -- all 42 nuts. Of the total, approximately a third were no good. So tonight, I shelled the pecans that were good. It didnt take long. The two-thirds of the 42 total pecans produced exactly one-half cup of nuts. Admittedly, I did nibble on the badly broken pieces and those pecans with spots on them as I toiled through the drudgery. So what to do with a meager half cup of pecans? What recipe calls for a mere half cup of goodies? Why waste a perfectly good freezer bag for a measly half cup of nuts? With my newly refreshed knowledge of mathematics, I decided to pose my dilemma in the form of a Common Core math word problem. Henceforth: Lets say that a middle school language arts teacher of twenty-eight years has a pecan tree in his back yard. In 2013-14, the said tree produced three five-gallon buckets of nuts. The following year, the same tree produced a grand total of 42 pecans. Considering that he was divorced in 2008, will the above-mentioned teacher have enough will power to get this question written before devouring his entire 2014-15 nut crop? Good question, huh? And if you know me very well, you know the correct answer. My half cup of pecans is gone forevermore, but my cup of blessings overfloweth now and always.
