WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TENNESSEE HANDGUN CARRY PERMIT CLASS : PART 1 OK. So, you decided to apply for a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. Before you do, you must complete a Basic Handgun Safety Course that has been certified by the Tennessee Department of Safety (there are some law enforcement and military exceptions to this). The first thing that you should be aware of is the word BASIC. The classroom lecture (which is four hours in length) will cover topics such as firearm safety and the fundamentals of marksmanship. How to safely store and maintain your firearm will also be discussed. Also the legalities of carrying a handgun will be covered in great detail. After the classroom lecture, the student will take a thirty question written examination. Fifteen questions on the test are in True / False format while the other Fifteen are multiple choice. After the classroom portion, its off to the gun range. Here the fundamentals discussed in the classroom environment are put to the test. Students will fire a fifty round course of fire utilizing a B-29 target (11.5 inches by 23 inches). Shots are fired at three, five, and seven yards. Getting back to the word BASIC. This class was designed and intended for the novice shooter. You do not have to be an expert marksman to participate in this class. A basic understanding of marksmanship does help, but many have been through this class without ever holding a firearm before. When you participate in this class, there may be other students in the class that are brand new to the shooting sports. Others may be former special forces operators. Regardless of the experience of the students, the class will keep to the same format emphasizing safety and learning marksmanship from square one. This is a BASIC HANDGUN SAFETY CLASS. It is only the beginning. You should never quit training.
