WHAT??? This is truly awful framing from ABS-CBNnews. Truly awful. Theyre blaming the poor for being poor... Here is the first line: Three Filipino scholars showed that being poor was not an excuse for not fulfilling the dream of finishing college. So if everyone else in poverty doesnt finish college, but poverty isnt excuse, then it must be them right?? Terrible article. Inside it says they are graduates of the SM Foundation, credit to SM Foundation for supporting kids through education. Credit to the kids for doing so well and working so hard. Yet what would have happened if SM hadnt sponsored them? Oh thats right, they wouldnt have been able to afford to go to school... poverty IS the reason for the vast majority of people! It is articles like these which perpetuate the myths that those in poverty are lazy, or stupid, or both... for every person who gets an article like this written about them there are hundreds of thousands of others who COULD NOT. Not that they didnt work hard enough, not that they werent smart enough, but that the institutional and economic framework perpetuating poverty means they CAN NOT. Whether it be they cannot afford to go to school in the first place and must work as children or if they can go to school but theyre sat with 100+ classmates unable to hear what typically undertrained and overworked teachers are saying in the first place... Shame on you ABS-CBN!! Absolute shame. There is little that is more evil than perpetuating the myth that poverty is a persons own fault...
