WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE A few of you will remember that line from ‘Cool Hand Luke’. In the movie, Luke, (Paul Newman) was on a penal farm and eventually beaten to death following those words. The comment alone probably wasn’t a threat to Luke’s life according to a Supreme Court decision, but if so, it would have constituted a crime. What if you read the following on Facebook from a man to his wife: “If I only knew then what I know now I would have smothered [you] with a pillow, dumped your body in the back seat, dropped you off in Toad Creek and made it look like rape and murder.” Other Facebook death threats towards the wife followed. His defense in court (as best I can tell) was that he was just rapping. He got 4 years. The Supreme Court is hearing the case soon to decide if his words constituted a real threat to life and if the conviction should be upheld. I’ve considered it and come to the conclusion that nobody could decide such a case, but I was reasonably sure he didn’t deserve 4 years in the slammer for being a fornicatin’ loony. But justice must be served and I have constructed a law, ‘The Fornicatin’ Loony’ law, which will be explained in detail in my next posting for your valuable criticism.
