WHATEVER Goughs mob actually achieved (& there are library shelves full of debate over this) , the aim of most of his reforms was to make Australia fairer, more inclusive, better educated, to make us aware of what we have in common rather than of what separates us. Abbott & the ill-bred thugs around him are well on the way to achieving the opposite. Rich hate poor, poor hate rich, those with jobs sneer at the unemployed, people are scared of growing old and, once having arrived there, worry about whether they can afford medical care. Its OK for white folk to hate Aborigines again, and for all of us to hate Muslims. Abbotts Australia is a fitting centrepiece for the Murdoch empire. Ruperts papers follow the formula: find the lowest common denominator, then work like blue blazes to lower it even further, at the same time insisting that to look at the world in any other way is unpatriotic. Were Goughs dreams all in vain? At this stage in our history, its beginning to look that way. How bloody tragic!
