Mixed reactions over animal incineration 05 March 2014 | Vivaga The recent controversy surrounding the proposed plan for the eThekwini Municipality to incinerate animal carcasses at public crematoriums has been met with mixed reaction. While some community leaders argued that disposing animal carcasses in the same furnaces as humans is a gross violation of religious scriptures others welcomed the idea saying all living creatures have life and breath the same air so it is okay for animals to be incinerated in the same place as humans. Presently the municipality operates three crematoriums, Chatsworth, Verulam and Tongaat and intends acquiring atmospheric licenses to legitimize operating at these sites. The city notice reads “Notices is hereby given that application has been made for an atmospheric emission license for the purpose of conducting the following activity- veterinary waste incineration. It invited those who objected to use of the crematorium for such purpose to write to the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs within 14 days.”
