WHEN GETTING DRUNK BECAME FASHIONABLE I am so drunk, announced a young woman at a party recently. We are all drunk, shouted a man back at her from another corner of the venue. Did you get sloshed at the weekend? asked a young colleague of mine who obviously did not know that I was high on life and did not need any intoxicants to get me any higher. Then, in the sauna, I overheard a conversation between two men - Do you know this place? asked one? No, not really, but if you want to know where to get drunk very expensive and where to get drunk very cheap, I can tell you. I know all the places where one can get drunk at any budget, replied the other gentleman with immense pride as if he was privy to where the Holy Grail was hidden.. I wonder why people these days are so proud of proclaiming that they are drunk. Time was when respectable people did not get drunk in public. Time was when getting drunk was considered a vice. Time was when getting drunk in public and creating a nuisance was akin to hooliganism. But I guess all that has changed now. These days, it is fashionable to get drunk and announce it to everyone loudly that you are drunk as if they cannot make it out themselves. These days, if you dont get drunk, you are considered something of an outcast. These days, if you dont drink, people actually come and ask you how can you enjoy a party without drinking? These days, if you dont drink, people have the audacity to ask you why are you living then if you dont drink as if life itself depends on drinking or people live only to have those intoxicating beverages after a hard days work. Times have indeed changed I must say.
