WHEN I WAS FIFTY-FOUR GregoryKTyree When I was four I had no cares I played with toys and teddy bears And mom was watching over me And in trouble I would often be My world was filled with joy and laughter And many happily ever afters I have pondered many times before What life would be if I could be four When I was fourteen I thought I was cool And my world was centered on my high school When problems consisted of girls and pimples Emotions were complex and nothing was simple Wars were raging and so were my hormones And Id talk for hours on the rotary phone I was in marching band, and not the cool scene Had lots of insecurities when I was fourteen When I was twenty-four my life was more varied A full-time job, and just newly married There was so much to do and less time to play I had a wife to take care of and bills to pay It was a time of spiritual confusion And the simplicity of life had become an illusion I began to ponder what I was here for Looking for answers when I was twenty-four When I was thirty-four life was at full-throttle I had a little girl and a boy on the bottle And pastored a little church up on a hill Each day an adventure, each evening a thrill In looking back on these best of days My heart feels so blessed and my mind is amazed For I had found what I am here for When I was a young man of thirty-four When I was forty-four I was in my prime I managed my life and managed my time I had wisdom from decades of living But was still young so I kept on giving I had a teenager that caused me hair loss And an awful life-crisis that became my cross For a period of time I didnt want to live anymore A very hard year when I was forty-four Today I turn fifty-four years old I dont have any fame and I dont have any gold My kids are both grown and one will be wed And I reflect on the things I have done and said Im content to be just right where I am Making a difference in the world I live in I honestly cant ask God for any more Just a thankful man who is fifty-four
