We had to cite ourselves, but you can remedy it by painting it within seven days of the citation. Internet videos of people tagging the wall aided in identification of those responsible, KWPD Spokes-model said. When we catch a tagger, they are not above the law, so they were cited for criminal mischief, KWPD Spokes-model said. Gary Ek said he expected artists to show up Wednesday night to re-tag the wall, but KWPD Spokes-model said if they do, criminal charges could result. He may think its fun but its also getting people in trouble, KWPD Spokes-model said. Sherrie Ek said she was disheartened because the painting was supposed to be fun. I just feel bad about it, she said. Personally, I wanted to really have fun with it and I thought it was kind of a neat thing that local artists were able to come and put some cool graffiti up. I think its a shame, being Key West is such an artists community. What harm would have come if they left it up for a week? My wife suggested painting Christmas things on the wall, Gary Ek said, when asked for his reaction to the whitewashing. It was really good art last night. Its kind of ridiculous when they are going to tear it down in another week. Its going to be a vicious circle. The wall has been maintained as private property for close to 40 years, although the city has now determined the ground underneath it, and for a distance behind the wall, is public rather than private property. The mayor said he had no knowledge of the white-ashing, or of the citation. I havent heard anything, Cates said. It is on city property, nobody can claim it if its on city property.
