WHEN IDEOLOGY TRUMPS COMMON SENSE: New Yorks mayor just re-appointed a city judge (her term expired at midnight) who freed two men who threatened to kill cops--just days after two cops were killed by a crazed murderer. She didnt even require the accused to post bail, though one had a habit of skipping court appearances. Of course, the judge is aligned with the mayor and his ideological allies. But the mayor may well have made a political mistake. Police unions and ordinary citizens are already angry. This is bad optics. as the consultants say. A smarter pol would have let the judges term expire and chosen someone else. (Surely, the West Side has another liberal lawyer willing to be a judge). When cops are turning their backs on you in public events and refusing to write revenue-generating tickets, you dont go out of your way to poke them in the eye.
