WHEN I’M AN OLD DOG OWNER When I am an old dog owner, I - TopicsExpress

WHEN I’M AN OLD DOG OWNER When I am an old dog owner, I shall wear worn t-shirts With rescue logos and dog breed sayings With a leash draped around neck. I shall spend my social security money On dog treats and fancy collars - just for fun. And I will sit on my porch and talk to my dogs For they hang on my every word. Rather than commune with the ladies To lunch and sip tea In their lovely dresses and fancy shoes, Hair all done up. I will choose to totter about My pockets bunched with cookies, Sharing my sandwiches With sniffing noses that beg and poke. My socks may not match. And my hair rarely see a comb. My clothes would want ironing And would be stained by dirty paws. But wet kisses and dog hair Will be the jewels of my life The sparkle of love in my eyes Better than the biggest diamond. I will be an embarrassment to all. My dogs will eat off my plate and fork, They will be lounging on my sofa Or milling about me, As dog hairs roll across the floor. Visitors will be few. Oh, I will be an embarrassment to all To all but to my dogs. So I shall happily spend my hours Strolling the sunny sidewalks, Wandering the grassy fields, With the ones who know me the best, Who hold all of my secrets. I shall spend my hours with the ones Who dont notice my socks, My hair or my clothes. And at night, as in our final days, When the world goes cold and dark They will sidle up to my bed, Sneak onto the covers Despite my teasing protests, Will curl up at my side, Their most comforting place, To be with me until the morning dawn. When I am an old dog owner. - Meg Trafford for Road Warrior Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Copyrighted 2015
