WHEN KING HUSSEIN signed, twenty years ago, the Jordanian Israeli - TopicsExpress

WHEN KING HUSSEIN signed, twenty years ago, the Jordanian Israeli peace treaty, his face was radiating with great hopes for the region and the Arabs. He was anticipating to have an end put to the Likud slogan that Jordan is an alternative homeland for the Palestinian people while historical Palestine will remain ethnically Jewish. His optimism carried him even further to have three more Arab states sign peace treaties with Israel, since their heads of state intimated such desires as long as the Oslo accords have been signed, a year ago, by Chairman Yasser Arafat, the directly concerned party in the Palestinian question. Many Jordanians and Parliamentarians were hoping that a genuine state of peace will bring an end to the multi-layered ramifications of the refugees problem. A state of peace will generate hundreds of thousands of job opportunities to satisfy the demand of strategic joint ventures like the Red Sea – Dead sea hydraulic power plants, Potash developments, Phosphate mega treatment, and irrigation projects. The Med- Dead project was another item on the agenda of mutual cooperation. But there were other parameters for the King’s vision, since he hoped to have the human being as the primary building block in a prosperous Middle East. It was the hope of mutual coexistence and warm friendship similar to the ones between France and Germany as it is today following years of bloodshed and misery during the Second World War. The Israeli accumulated expertise in cultivating the desert, and rehabilitating the barren valleys will be greatly needed in an atmosphere of peaceful relationship when Palestinians, Jordanians and Israelis exchange family visits and plan for joint industrial and agricultural ventures. Next to King Hussein, at Wadi Araba on the 26th of October 1994, was Israel’s prime minister Yitzhaq Rabin whose face exuded with anticipations that a new map is being drafted for a prosperous tranquil Middle East where all people in the region will share the same hopes and aspiration that citizens in the European Union cherish. But the assassin’s bullets, a year later, on the 4th November 1995, did not allow Rabin to erect a new façade for peace amongst four Arab states including Syria. The same applies to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu whose policies in Gaza and Al Aqsa mosque succeeded in assassinating King Hussein’s hopes for a region where all future generations will live in peace, prosperity, dignity, and happiness within a supra structure of a multi lingual, multi creedal, multi racial Middle East. That was King Hussein’s vision and hope for all younger generations in our region. The realization of that vision into tangible facts on the ground would have eradicated the roots of terrorism and saved thousands of lives in Iraq, Syria and the Islamic State of Mosul.
