WHERE ART THOU? GO HERE. IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. Yes, you guessed it. Sculpture by the Sea is now officially open for an estimated 500,000 attendants - many of which will visit the exhibition over the weekend. That’s a subtle tip to try and get there during the week. One particular exhibition artist is now hoping to set a record of his own. He needs your help. The goal: to pass through the arch of his artwork 999,999,999 times. At the media launch today, The Premier of NSW, The Hon. Mike Baird announced a commitment from the New South Wales Government of $1.2 million in funding to the exhibition for the next four years. “I’m proud to announce the NSW Government has renewed its support for Sculpture for the Sea and will provide $1.2 million to one of Sydney’s most anticipated annual exhibitions for the next four years,” Mr Baird said. Begun in 1997 with no budget and a team of volunteers, the exhibition has inspired these artists to create 1,847 sculptures over the past 18 years. It has survived through the support of its sponsors, including Principal Sponsor Macquarie Group, 2014s Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi will exhibit 109 sculptures by artists from around the world including Argentina, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the USA. Selected from over 500 submissions worldwide, this years exhibition will have 33 artists exhibiting for the first time at Bondi. This years exhibition will also welcome two new members to its Decade Club: Ian Swift and Peter Tilley, both from regional NSW, who have exhibited on the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk 10 times. The main feature: Geoff Drake-Brockmans human counting-machine Counter will be set to zero, positioned at Tamarama Beach and will count the number of people who walk through it (yes, you can walk through it more than once) There are two aspects to being counted; a positive and negative. The positive is to participate in the social order to stand up and be counted. To make your life count. The negative is to be reduced to a number in a machine of some entities database. People can make the choice to be counted or not. This machine has been exhibited four times around the world, including the city of Aarhus, Denmark and Cottesloe beach, Perth. Aarhus holds the current record of the number of people to walk through Counter with 288,601, which included Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. Will Tamarama set a new record? The final works for this years Sculpture By the Sea were chosen from 400 submissions. Exhibition acquisitions manager Eleanor Cheetham says all 109 equally complement the seaside site. The best part is seeing the vibrancy of the audience. Especially children, who interact so freely with the sculptures. Were seeing a whole generation of kids feeling comfortable around artwork. So feel free to let your inner child run wild with these artworks. The big kids will have no problem blending in with the little kids.
