WHERE IS BF... THE TRANSFORMER... THE BUILDER? I am moved to ask this question when a good friend of mine Jim Uy shared this photo (which he only took last week) to me of the Riverbanks Complex. For those who didnt know Bayani F. Fernando, heres a quick flashback trip down memory lane when the guy referred to as BF was Mayor of Marikina City (1992-2001) -- back then, a big Tumana or farmland. How he was able to TRANSFORM it from an obscure municipality to the cleanest and greenest city during his watch was the subject of an interview I did for the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1993 upon the advice of then, KBP head-honcho Joerol Jose Escaner and through the help of Armand Dean Nocum, one of Inquirers top reporters then, and the ad support of a dear friend Pepito Olarte, now the Senior Vice President of Inquirer Group of Companies. Look closely at this photo while reading excerpts below from the 1993 interview and find out if BF is just a Dreamer... or a Builder. ~ Perhaps, one of the most ambitious plans of the youthful Mayor is the Marikina River Recreational Parks which aims to develop the riverbanks into a sports and recreational paradise for its townspeople. The plan calls for the installation of drainage and environmental systems control to arrest its further degradation. BF dreams of seeing the riverbanks as a picnic and camping grounds with children playing basketball, volleyball, etc. He visualizes water fountains, flower beds, tree-planting pockets, boat rides, cafes and kiosks and a sports and recreational complex with parking facilities. Ever since he was a child, BF has this long-nurtured vision of a new Marikina. The guy is a dreamer… but he is also a builder.
