WHEW! The final day of voting registration, and voting day itself, - TopicsExpress

WHEW! The final day of voting registration, and voting day itself, should be national holidays for everyone except the federal and state governments. Just got my loved ones registered, had them fill out and print and sign the form, did my Tour Of Houston, collected them, drove them up to our post office, looped back around for home. The sweetheart at the post office stamped them in front of me when she realized I was anxious about the postmark. Hooray, pleasant, helpful, effective government! The clerks and sorters know so many customers by name, theyre local folks, and theyve been there forever. One of the things I love is that they really work at customer service. They like each other and make people laugh when the lines get a little long. A facilitator answers questions, approaches people in line to find out what they need, and speeds things immensely for customers by taking drop-offs. While I was there I watched her help a customer unpack an ill-fitting box and repackage a less-expensive, more fitting one, wisecracking and relaxing the woman the whole way. Nobody in line wasnt grinning. If you hate government, go spend 20 minutes to send something at the Old Town Spring post office on 2920 sometime during the week. I may just yelp how pleased I am with my experience today. On the way in, a woman hailed me in the parking lot. May I please just hold your arm as I step up the curb? I hate to ask for help, but... and of course my arm was already out to help her step up and hold open the door for her. She thanked me profusely and explained that her husband usually accompanies her, but she dropped by on impulse and didnt have her walker in the car. She paused inside and thanked me yet again and asked, Are you a Christian? I had a split-second to make a choice. As I was dropping off my husbands and daughters voter registration forms, I decided to be kind. No, maam, I smiled, Im a Democrat. I patted her arm and wished her a great day as I went one direction and she went the other. An awesome feeling, being the change. I highly recommend it. Is there a Facebook emoticon for feeling smug?
