WHICH LANGUAGE DID KING SHAKA SPEAK? It might surprise you if youve never really thought about it but King Shaka ka Senzangakhona himself never spoke the language we call isiZulu the way proper isiZulu speakers do. He grew up under the Mthethwa, more specifically under Godongwanes (Dingiswayo) tutulege. Now the Mthethwa, although popularly and erroneously called amaLala a proposition which also serves to butress this point, were a major house of abaMbo a nation who were parallel abeNguni. The point is this: AbaMbo; amaLala and amaThonga, all classified under the appellation Nguni, spoke the Tekela dialects of Nguni (except for amaNdebele ka Musi who speak with a Z but are abaMbo). It is this fact which allows me to state with almost full certainty that king Shaka who grew up amongst the Mhlongo people who to the nations of the Sun (isizwe saseLangeni since they come from Dlamini-MLangeni) and then went on to live with Godongwane of the Mthethwa, another Tekela speaking people, he must have naturally spoken more like a modern day mSwati rather than a proper mZulu from say Ondini or anywhere elsewhere in the nation he created!
