WHMA Thursday News Update - WHMABIG95 According to Gadsden Police, a Gadsden man is dead after being stabbed early Wednesday morning. The male victim died at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, according to Deputy Coroner Michael Head. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The man died about 9am. The incident took place in the Mill Village area of Alabama City in Gadsden. A search is ongoing for a suspect. Money will be tight in Anniston city government for the next fiscal year. The police, fire and street departments must cut back on some services which will result in longer police response times, fewer brush pickups, etc. City officials say the cuts are needed to improve the financial health of Anniston as tax revenues have declined. The police and fire departments in particular were cut so more money could go to their pension fund. Anniston city schools increased their enrollment by 340 students during the first five days of the new school year. That is compared to the first five days of the last school year. That stops a 10 year decline in Anniston public school enrollment. The figures show there was an average of 2,071 students enrolled over the first five days of Anniston’s school year, which began August 11th. Growth in enrollment was spread throughout all seven schools. Cherokee County officials say they are looking for a 9-foot-long constricting snake in the Cedar Bluff area. The snake, which is believed to be either a python or a boa constrictor, was spotted Tuesday along County Road 131 in Cedar Bluff. The snake has not been caught. It is unclear where the snake came from. No one has reported any missing exotic pet. An unidentified 19-year old Hoover man was pulled by rescuers from Cheaha Lake, where he drowned. A companion saw him go under three hours earlier. Cleburne County officials said the victim’s family members identified the body, but because other family members have not been informed the name will not be released. The man had been hiking in the area with a friend. The pair, tired from the hike, had stopped to swim in the lake, just west of Mount Cheaha’s peak. The capital murder trial of Joyce Hardin Garrard, 49, was scheduled to go to trial September 22nd but, the Etowah County grandmother accused of running her 9-year-old granddaughter to death in 2012, has had her trial reset for next year. Etowah County Circuit Judge Billy Ogletree issued an order moving the trial to the February 23rd criminal jury docket. **** SPORTS **** Jason Heyward hit a leadoff home run off Zack Wheeler, Julio Teheran won his third straight start and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 3-2 Wednesday night to stop a three-game losing streak. Josh Gordon will miss the 2014 season after the NFL upheld the Cleveland Browns stars suspension for a failed test for marijuana. The NFL said Wednesday that the arbitrator upheld the suspension. The Pro Bowler had appealed the ruling. Alabama senior middle linebacker Trey DePriest was suspended for a minor NCAA infraction, coach Nick Saban said Wednesday. No further details were provided about the specific rule violated.
